A minimally invasive alternate to invasive surgical procedures for patients with chronic discogenic lower back pain

The lifetime prevalence of chronic lower back pain in the United States is 10% to 20%, and 30% to 50% of chronic low back pain originates in the lumbar spinal discs. Intradiscal Electrothermal * Therapy (IDET) is a percutaneous procedure that delivers precisely controlled doses of therapeutic heat to the damaged regions of lumbar spinal discs. In numerous clinical studies the IDET procedure has relieved chronic lower back pain, reduced medication usage, decreased disability allowing patients to return to work, and improved functional measures such as the ability to sit or walk.

  • In 6 prospective case series reporting the percentage of patients with significant improvement in pain, rates of significant improvement ranged from 45% to 67%.
  • In 4 prospective case series that measured patient satisfaction, between 63% and 88% of patients said they would have the IDET procedure again.
  • More than 75,000 IDET procedures have been performed in the United States alone since 1998.
  • The average cost of IDET is 7 to 8 times less than the average hospital cost of lumbar fusion surgery.
